Federation Metadata Explorer

The Federation Metadata Explorer is an online tool that will retrieve the federation metadata document from your AD FS service and display the contents in a readable format. In addition to viewing the contents, this is a great way to check that your federation service is reachable from the extranet.

The federation metadata document is a XML file that is available for download at the following AD FS endpoint:

https://contoso.com/federationmetadata/2007-06/federationmetadata.xml

It contains information about your federation service that is used to create trusts, identify token-signing certificates, and many other things. So it needs to be publicly available so that other parties can access and consume it.
